Refugees in no hurry to leave Ingushetia for ChechnyaTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus - Chechen refugees living in tent camps in Ingushetia are not rushing back to Chechnya, said Ruslan Tsugayev, head of the Moscow-backed Chechen government's task force for displaced persons.
"As of now, about 2,000 people stated their desire to return, but the actual number of returnees is considerably lower," he said.
Tsugayev attributed the slow-paced repatriation to insufficient accommodations in Grozny. "Temporary accommodation centers are just not prepared for refugees."
Another reason is failing to compensate the private sector for leasing the dwellings for those who have already returned, he said, adding that since October 2002 no money has exchanged hands.
"People are unwilling to move into the private sector because they don't believe we will pay for the leasing on their homes."
There are approximately 64,000 refugees in Ingushetia at present, of whom 15,000 live in tent camps. (T/E) |
