Two female suicides in Grozny By Ruslan Isayev
GROZNY, Chechnya – During the past week alone, two women in Grozny have committed suicide. The first case occurred in the suburb of Michurin, where a 42-year-old mother of four children was found hanged in her own home. Doctors tried to resuscitate her, but to no avail.
According to neighbours, the woman killed herself because her husband had married another woman. The relatives and loved ones are still in shock from the incident and are very reluctant to talk about it.
Another suicide occurred in Grozny’s Staropromyslovsky district. A young woman in the fifth month of pregnancy brought her life to an end in the same way on hearing of the death of her husband who was accidentally blown up by a mine.
In Islam, suicide is considered a major sin. Accordingly, Islamic theologians preach that a person who has committed suicide should not be given an elaborate funeral. The person’s relatives carry out a thorough investigation of their own in order to find out what drove him or her to this sin. And if it comes to light that the person was deliberately pushed in the direction of suicide by means of psychological pressure, blood vengeance is declared.
In today's Chechnya, where the line between secular and religious life is rather blurred, a man with many wives is considered almost a hero. In the pursuit of cheap publicity, some men gratify their own sense of self-importance by simply ignoring the strict rules which prescribe that a man may have up to four wives. Islam states categorically that all the wives must be treated equally and that no wife should be deprived of what is due to her by right. (D/T) RELATED ARTICLES: ·
