Czech Syndicate of Journalists appeals to Russian authorities to cease intimidation of journalists May 16, 2007
The Czech Syndicate of Journalists is concerned on hearing the news that the Russian Union of Journalists has been given notice to leave the Moscow offices in which its headquarters are.
Especially disquieting is that this is happening just before the opening of the 26th World Congress of the International Union of Journalists in Moscow at the end of May, which the Russian Union of Journalists is hosting.
A suspicion is growing that the Russian authorities want to somehow influence this Congress meeting. The meeting's primary topic, among many others, will be human rights in Russia, especially with regard to freedom of speech and working conditions for independent media.
For this reason the Czech Syndicate of Journalists appeals to the Russian authorities to cease their intimidation of the Russian journalists' organization, as well as of individual editors and journalists.
