September 2
In the Ingushetian town of Karabulak local inhabitant Apti Dolakov was shot dead and his companion detained by a group of unknown armed men, who were subsequently detained by local police but eventually freed at the order of Ingushetia's Interior Minister because of their alleged affiliation with the Federal Security Service (FSB).
September 3
In the village of Gukhoi in the Itum-Kalinsky district of Chechnya one policeman was killed and several were wounded in a guerrilla attack on the house of the head of the local administration, and in gunfire at a school.
A Presidential Lycée opened in Grozny. It will give children intensive instruction in four academic disciplines.
Guerrillas operating in Ingushetia claimed responsibility for a series of attacks against government forces and other incidents that took place in the republic this past summer, according to a statement by them published on the pro-guerrilla website Daymohk.
September 4
Dokka Umarov, President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, dismissed the chairman of the Ichkerian Supreme Sharia Court, Mansur Yovmirzayev, appointing Anzor Astemirov acting chairman.
September 5
Two police officers from the republic of Buryatia were killed in Chechnya's Naursky district.
Gas supplies to four villages in Kabardino-Balkaria were cut off by a triple pipeline explosion near the town of Elbrus in the mountainous district of Elbrussky.
Karachayevo-Cherkessian guerrilla commander Rustam Ionov (aka Abubakar) and his companion Elvira Kitova (aka Amina) were killed on the border between Georgia and the Karachayevo-Cherkessian Republic, Russian media reported, citing the Federal Security Service (FSB).
September 6
Two Koreans, a father and son, were found shot dead in their home in the Ingushetian village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya.
September 7
Unknown perpetrators shot dead Natalya Mudarova, head doctor of the blood transfusion centre of the republican hospital in Ingushetia's Nazran.
September 8
Chechen guerrilla Musa Mutiyev was killed in Grozny.
Ingushetian MPs expressed full support for President Murat Zyazikov and condemned a "propaganda campaign" that had allegedly been waged against the republic in recent weeks, the government website Ingushetia.ru reported.
September 9
A Chechen serviceman was killed on the outskirts of the village of Pervomaiskoye in Chechnya's Groznensky district when an exchange of fire broke out during the inspection of a vehicle by soldiers of the "Zapad" battalion. The vehicle's driver, who put up armed resistance, also died in the incident, while his passenger, also a guerrilla, managed to escape.
Two guerrillas and one Russian serviceman were killed when guerrillas attacked the barracks of a federal battalion in the Ingushetian town of Malgobek.
September 10
Vagap Tutakov, the Ichkerian MP and ex-representative of President Aslan Maskhadov in PACE, was abducted by unknown armed men in camouflage uniform in the Urus-Martanovsky district of Chechnya.
Two Russian servicemen were killed when unknown gunmen fired on their vehicle in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny.
The Kavkaz-Center news and propaganda site claimed that the Nevsky Express train was blown up by the Riyadus-Salikhin "Martyr Battalion", citing a new statement from a source which had earlier reported on acts of sabotage by the same organization.
September 11
As many as 100 guerrillas of the Western Resistance Front are currently active in Ingushetia, and are being led by Ichkerian President Dokka Umarov, a source in one of Russia's law enforcement agencies claimed.
Three male members of a local Roma family were shot by unknown gunmen in the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya in Ingushetia's Sunzhensky district.
September 12
The communications company VympelKom, which operates under the "Beeline" brand, announced the start of commercial operations in Chechnya, giving local inhabitants an alternative to the Megafon mobile network monopoly.
A traffic police officer was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Ingushetia's largest city Nazran, local police said.
September 13
Shamil Burayev, the former head of Chechnya's Achkhoi-Martanovsky district, was arrested on suspicion of organizing the execution-style murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, according to a report published in the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda on September 15. Burayev denied involvement in the murder.
September 14
Polish border guards said they had found the bodies of three Chechen girls in the Bieszczady mountains near the Ukrainian border after rescuing their mother, who apparently spent days wandering there after the family entered the country illegally.
September 17
Rappani Khalilov, who was known as the „emir“ of the Dagestani mujahedeen and his second-in-command Nabi Nabiyev were killed in the village of Novy Sulak in Dagestan's Kizilyurtovsky district
Unidentified attackers killed FSB officer Alikhan Kalimatov near the village of Gazi-Yurt in the Nazran district of Ingushetia. One of the officer’s colleagues was seriously injured in the attack. In a statement published by the news and propaganda site Kavkaz-Center on September 26, guerrillas operating in Ingushetia declared their involvement in the elimination of Kalimatov.
September 18
The acting head of the criminal investigation division of the Sunzhensky district police department, Abdurakhman Meyriyev, was shot dead by unknown perpetrators in the Ingushetian village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya.
Russia's acting Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov resigned, reportedly due to his too close family ties with the recently appointed Premier Viktor Zubkov.
September 19
A rally took place in Nazran, expressing protest at the recent abductions of residents of Ingushetia. Police tried to disperse the crowd by shooting over the protesters' heads. At night two members of the Aushev family, whose September 18 abduction in Chechnya's Grozny sparked the rally, were released.
Two OMON policemen from Russia's Rostovskaya Oblast were attacked in their car in Ingushetia's Nazran. Two of them died of wounds in the hospital.
September 20
Two policemen from Russia's Ryazanskaya Oblast were killed and two wounded when their vehicle came under fire in Nazran, Ingushetia.
Two gunmen were killed during a special operation in Dagestan's capital city of Makhachkala. A member of the Russian special forces was also killed.
September 21
The Moscow-backed Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov signed a decree on the autumn call-up of Chechen conscripts, the presidential press service announced.
The lawyer of Shamil Burayev, the former head of Chechnya's Achkhoi-Martanovsky district, announced that Burayev had been charged with participation in the execution-style murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
One member of the guerrilla group that attacked soldiers in a suburb of Nazran, Ingushetia, was killed during fighting in the forest near the village of Ali-Yurt.
September 22
Vagap Tutakov, former special representative of Aslan Maskhadov in Strasbourg and member of the Chechen parliament of 1997, who was reportedly abducted by unidentified persons on September 10, was released.
September 24
Dmitry Kozak, who after the Beslan hostage crisis became the Russian President's authorized representative in the Southern Federal District, was appointed head of the Ministry of Regional Development. On October 9 Grigory Rapota, former secretary-general of the Eurasian Economic Community and former career KGB officer, was appointed to the post that was occupied by Kozak.
Chechnya's Human Rights Ombudsman Nurdi Nukhazhiev met with Vagap Tutakov, an ex-deputy of the Parliament of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, the Ombudsman's press service announced, not commenting on Tutakov's abduction of September 10-22.
September 25
Ingushetia's parliament passed a bill banning the use of vehicles with tinted windows and no number plates, Russian media reported, citing the parliament's speaker. The initiative comes after a series of recent crimes involving such vehicles.
Russian media reported that the Chechen parliament was going to take legal action for slander and character defamation against opposition politician Garry Kasparov after he called pro-Moscow Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov a "bandit". On the following day the website Kasparov.ru announced that Kasparov wrote to Russia's public prosecutor about threats he received from official representatives of the Chechen Republic.
September 27
Two local inhabitants, the Galayev brothers, were killed during a special operation by federal and local forces in the village of Sagopshi in Ingushetia's Malgobeksky district. While the Ingushetian Interior Ministry said they were guerrillas, the residents of Sagopshi denied it.
September 29
Dokka Umarov, President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, appointed Emir Abdul Madzhid commander of the Dagestan Front, according to the October 1 report by the news and propaganda site Kavkaz-center. Madzhid thus replaced Rappani Khalilov, who was killed on September 17.
