Three policemen with suspected guerrilla link arrested in IngushetiaAlikhan Batayev, North Caucasus – Three Ingush policemen accused of aiding and abetting guerrillas were arrested in Ingushetia; two were charged with murder and participation in illegal armed units.
The suspects, Aspiyev, Dolgiyev and Khamkhoyev, worked in different units controlled by the ministry. Both Aspiyev, an Ingush OMON member, and Dolgiyev, a policeman, confessed – according to investigators - to having cooperated with the guerrillas.
According to Aspiyev, Dolgiyev participated in the June raid on Ingush and federal forces in Nazran. Stolen weapons and ammunition were reportedly found in the yard of Dolgiyev`s house.
The third man, police sergeant Khamkhoyev, was only charged with possession and sale of explosives.
All of this supports the theory that the June raid was not carried out by Chechens. According to military analysts, such a large scale operation, requiring familiarity with local conditions, had to have been carried out by local Ingush fighters.
On the night between June 21 and 22, all police and some other buildings in three Ingush cities were simultaneously attacked; 98 people were killed, including 62 military and security personnel. (S/E,T)
