Two policemen shot in centre of NazranBy Tomas Vrsovsky
NAZRAN, Ingushetia – A shootout took place between law enforcement officers and unidentified armed men in the bustling centre of Nazran this evening. Two policemen were immediately taken to hospital in cars, but both died shortly afterwards.
The incident occurred at 6:28pm Moscow time, in front of the covered market building near Nazran's bus station. In spite of the late hour, the market was still crowded with people buying food for the upcoming holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.
Remaining at the scene were an armoured police vehicle and a Mercedes car bearing Lithuanian number plates. The passengers of the Mercedes, who opened fire at the police officers, managed to escape.
An officer of the law enforcement agencies, which later cordoned off the scene, told Prague Watchdog that the men who shot the policemen were armed with submachine guns. (Translation by DM) (D/T)
