Arrests of Chechen residents connected with guerrillas continueBy Ruslan Isayev
CHECHNYA – This month law enforcement agencies detained more than ten people who, according to investigators, gave all kinds of assistance to the guerrillas and were ready to join their units at any time.
One revealing example is that of two residents of the Groznensky district who helped their cousin, guerrilla commander Ramzan Saluyev. Both detainees, who were shown on local television, acknowledged that at Saluyev‘s request they purchased several mobile phones, SIM cards and a large quantity of top-up cards. Both say they did so out of fear of their lives.
Two other detainees from the same district are accused of more serious crimes. The case involves their participation in sabotage training that was given at a guerrilla base. This was also reported by a local television station.
Both detainees, two adult males, deny their involvement in any guerrilla attacks on civilians, but admit to having taken part in a training course in the mountains that entailed target practice with automatic weapons. The two men say they were not involved in any other illegal activities. There is an official investigation. (D/T)
