Case of abduction of Makhmut Magomadov deadlocked

PRESS RELEASE № 707

25th January, 2005
Nazran, Republic of Ingushetia

CASE OF ABDUCTION OF MAHMUT MAGOMADOV DEADLOCKED

Employees of Regional Public Movement “ Chechen Committee for National Salvation” periodically are through with relatives of Magomadov Mahmut abducted the last week hoping that in the given case anything new will appear. Relatives, friends, his colleagues are in continual searches of Magomadov.

We remind, that on January 20, 2005 in Grozny by unknown armed people to all appearance by employees of Kadyrov’s Security Service the known Chechen lawyer and human rights activist Magomadov Mahmut Dzhaparovich is taken away to unknown direction whose site till now is not established.

However in the given case there are certain vagueness. The matter is that on January 24, 2005 the summons was handed to relatives of Mahmut in which it is spoken that on January 25, 2005 Magomadov Mahmut should be in Staropromyslovsky Regional Department of Internal Affairs. And if to trust the investigator of Regional Department of Internal Affairs, Saipudin Murtaev referring to the investigator of Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office, Tsukumov Ruslan Magomadov Mahmut was released already on January 23, 2005.

The relatives of Magomadov making all efforts to find a way out of the impasse today in the afternoon nevertheless managed to speak with Tsukumov Ruslanа with the purpose to find out from him whence data about release of Magomadov are received.

Further events began to develop in the strange way. Tsukumov Ruslan asserts that he knows from the head of Militia, Ahyad Bisultanov about release of Magomadov. But Bisultanov in his turn refers to the investigator of Regional Public Prosecutor’s office, Tsukumov Ruslan.

There is such impression as if someone is obviously interested in disappearance of Magomadov Mahmut. From above-stated become obviously that law-enforcement structures are well informed about the happening. And moreover assert that Magomadov has been released already they probably are better informed on destiny and a site of Mahmut than relatives and friends of the abducted.

Thus it is obvious that affair concerning abduction and release of Magomadov deadlocked. The report of workers of Public Prosecutor’s Office and Militia, that Magomadov is free is alerted very much although he still is in hands of abductors. May be they act by someone’s order? Differently how do the reasons of such statements explain?

In the previous press releases on the given occasion we wrote that cases when the abducted citizens were released are extremely rare. At best relatives of people who have disappeared managed to find corpses of the abducted relatives.

In this connection we consider that urgent and operative intervention of the President of the Russian Federation, V.Putin to who various Russian and international human rights organizations are addressed requests to promote urgent release of Magomadov Mahmut. Differently there is a danger of disappearance of Magomadov as it happened with journalist of IA «France - press», Ali Astamirov, abducted on July 4, 2003.

The press release is prepared and released with (The National Endowment for Democracy)
