Kadyrov's security might be responsible for detention of rights activist

CHECHNYA, February 9, Caucasus Times - Chechen watchdog Mahmut Magomadov abducted on January, 20 in Groznyy by a group of gunmen, is alive being detained at the base security service of the President of Chechnya, Caucasus Times reports citing a source in the regional Interior Ministry.

Probably, the rights activist has been a captive of the securities of Ramzan Kadyrov, as Mr. Magomadov is said to be kept in Tsentaroi of Kurchaloi district of Chechnya, the Kadyrov clan's village. The security service commanded by Ramzan Kadyrov is a notorious "power structure" of Chechnya, widely known among the locals as "kadyrovtsy".

The officer said on condition of anonymity the information was reliable as it was given by a security agent who had seen himself Mr. Magomadov at the base in Tsentaroi.

Mr. Magomadov headed a team of investigators of the Prosecutor's Office of Ichkeria under Aslan Maskhadov's rule, who were investigating into abduction cases at the time, Caucasus Times correspondent quoted the officer as saying.

Soon after Mr. Magomadov's abduction the police were telling his relatives that he had been released. The prosecutors contradicted saying the watchdog had been detained by the regional branch of FSB.
