Ingush resident nominated for Nobel Peace Prize By Umalt Chadayev
Nazran, INGUSHETIA - A committee has been formed in Nazran to promote the nomination of a well-known local public figure for the Nobel Peace Prize.
An initiative group of nine people, who include representatives of local intellectuals, non-governmental organizations and internally displaced persons, intend to nominate 74-year-old Magomed Aushev for the award. The committee's chairman is Aslambek Apayev, who is also the Moscow Helsinki Group's expert on the North Caucasus and head of the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Internally Displaced Persons.
In a statement issued by the group, attention is drawn to Mr Aushev's role as a conciliator in the settlement of disputes and blood feuds, as an organizer of aid for refugees, and as a peacemaker throughout the Chechen wars who strove to to dissuade Russian troops from committing acts of violence against the local populations of the North Caucasus. In 1999 Mr Aushev was awarded the Order of Friendship medal by Russian President Boris Yeltsin.
On September 18 2007, two of Mr Aushev's younger male relatives were abducted by members of the Russian special services in a Grozny suburb, but were released after a large-scale demonstration in Nazran.
