Russian Deputy Interior Minister Yuri Maltsev became new commander of Russia's "counter-terrorist operation" in the North Caucasus. Maltsev replaced Colonel-General of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Anatoly Yezhkov.
Wednesday, July 30
Nikolai Payzulayev of Akhmad Kadyrov's press service asked the Chechen Election Committee to register him as a candidate for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic, whose election the Kremlin organizes on October 5. Payzulayev became the 5th candidate for the post.
Thursday, July 31
Deputy commandant of the Chechen Republic Said-Selim Tsuyev asked the Chechen Election Committee to register him as a candidate for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic. Tsuyev became the 6th candidate for the post.
Ruslan Khasbulatov, a Chechen politician living in Moscow, announced his intention to run for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic.
Over 30,000 people have submitted an application for the compensation for their housing and property they had completely lost during military activities in Chechnya, Russian authorities announced.
Friday, August 1
A powerful explosion completely destroyed a Russian military hospital in the North Ossetian town of Mozdok, killing 50 people and injuring 80 others, according to official figures. Russian authorities announced that the explosion was caused by a lorry packed with explosives that blew up in front of the building and Russian officials said that it is Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev who is most likely to have masterminded the attack. Basayev did not claim responsibility for the attack, though.
Deputy CEO of oil mining company Grozneft Kudus Saduyev asked the Chechen Election Committee to register him as a candidate for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic. Saduyev became the 7th candidate for the post.
Deputy editor-in-chief of Chechen newspaper Marsho Ruslan Zakriyev asked the Chechen Election Committee to register him as a candidate for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic. Zakriyev became the 8th candidate for the post.
Former district secretary of the Soviet communist party and then vice-premier in Jokhar Dudayev's government Khusein Bibulatov asked the Chechen Election Committee to register him as a candidate for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic. Bibulatov became the 9th candidate for the post.
