Picket in Shali

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Several hundred inhabitants of the district centre Shali have been picketing the district military headquarters since November 21 after Russian soldiers at night robbed and beat inhabitants of several houses in the Kirova street in the south-western part of Shali.

Participants in the picket called on the Russian military command to immediately launch investigation, find and prosecute perpetrators of the night attack on the civilians as well as to return the stolen property and compensate them for the damage.

The protesters have been joined by some inhabitants of neighbouring villages Avtury and Serzhen-Yurt, who were outraged by the behaviour of Russian soldiers, regularly carrying out in their villages so-called mopping-up operations and arbitrarily detaining people.

Today the district commandant received the protesters' delegation and promised to look into their complaints.
