While The Joint Working Group of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe and Russian State Duma was visiting Chechnya, the village of Avtury was undergoing a cruel mopping-up operation in the days of December 1-3.

"MOPPING-UP" OPERATION AT GROZNY UNIVERSITY ON NOVEMBER 12, 2001
During the "mopping-up" oepration at the university in Grozny seven students were detained and the dean of the Faculty of Economy was beaten up. The day after the students staged protests at the building of the pro-Russian Chechen government.

THE KILLING OF RIZVAN LORSANOV
The dead bodies of Rizvan Lorsanov and other two men were found near to the village of Belgatoi on Shalinski district on December 3, 2001. Deputy of the Chechen parliament, Rizvan Lorsanov, was well known in Chechnya for his peace-making efforts during the first Chechen war.

RUSSIA: RIGHTS DEFENDER REPORTED KILLED IN CHECHNYA
Press release of the Human Rights Watch demanding an investigation of the killing of the Chechen human rights activist Luiza Betergirieva of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society. "This killing would appear to be a horrifying tactic to silence those who expose abuses," said Elizabeth Andersen, executive director of Human Rights Watch's Europe and Central Asia division. "And in Chechnya, continued abuses must be exposed."
