Russia's abusive military operations are spreading from Chechnya to Ingushetia, Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated, referring to "numerous cases of arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, and looting during recent "sweep" operations conducted in Ingush villages and settlements of displaced Chechens" that were documented by HRW researchers.

Four people were killed and some three dozen others wounded when a bomb exploded in front of the local police station in the Dagestani town of Khasavyurt.

The security situation in Chechnya remains grave and there is no end in sight to the human rights abuses in the republic, stated the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, referring to its mission to Ingushetiya and Chechnya on July 13-17.
Zaindi Mavlatov, former Secretary of the Security Council of Ingushetia and unsuccessful candidate for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in the election in 1997, officially declared his interest to run for the post of the President of the Chechen Republic, announced the Central Election Commission of the Chechen Republic.
Ingush journalist Alikhan Guliyev was shot dead in front of his flat in Moscow. Guliyev, among other things, covered the situation in Chechnya as a free-lancer for Russian television TVC and worked at the Ingush state television but he was also involved in a political struggle in Ingushetia.

Several Russian soldiers and several Chechen guerilla fighters died in a battle in the Dyshne-Vedeno village in the Vedensky district.
Salambek Maigov, the representative of the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria to the Russian Federation, announced that during his six-day mission to the United States last week he met with officials from the US Department of Defense and US Department of State to discuss the common threat of international terrorism and political mechanisms for resolving the conflict in Chechnya.
